Seit einiger Zeit gibt es diskussionen um die Firefox Pakete in Debian, siehe hier.

Daraus entwickelte sich der auf dem Firefox basierende Browser "GNU Iceweasel".
Er ist, im ganzen, Freie Software !
Einige, als nicht-frei, geltende Komponenten wurden entfernt, sowie nicht-freie Plugins.
Weitere Sicherheitsfeatures wurden eingebaut:

- Some sites refer to zero-size images on other hosts to keep track of cookies. When IceWeasel detects this mechanism it blocks cookies from the site hosting the zero-length image file. (It is possible to re-enable such a site by removing it from the blocked hosts list.)
- Other sites rewrite the host name in links redirecting the user to another site, mainly to "spy" on clicks. When this behavior is detected, IceWeasel shows a message alerting the user.

Der Name entspringt einem "Matt Groening" Zitat:

Eine ganz andere Politik verfolgt Ubuntu.
Firefox soll auch weiterhin als Firefox erhalten bleiben !

"After a discussion with Mozilla representatives, which took some time due to
both of us being busy with major new releases, were making good progress
toward an arrangement where we will maintain the Firefox brand and work
closely with upstream to ensure that were both happy with how Firefox is
represented in Ubuntu.

As a preliminary step, weve incorporated branding changes and some bug
fixes into the final firefox builds for Edgy which were agreed with Mozilla."
